What are hormones?

Hormones are important aspects of the endocrine system in the human body. Hormones and their functions in the human body are significant.  They have a long evolutionary history since the cell was formed billions of years ago. You must have always heard and come across people using terms hormones, genetics.

In simple terms hormones are messengers that assist and give directions to organs tissues.There are numerous types and diversified chemical structure of hormones They also have several effects on the body. 

Hormones are substances produced by your endocrine glands that have a tremendous effect on bodily processes. They affect growth and development, mood, sexual function, reproduction, and metabolism.Functions of hormones help the body to work smoothly and efficiently. Hormonal imbalance and improper functions can happen due to lifestyle and environmental factors.

Endocrine glands, which are special groups of cells, make hormones. The major endocrine glands are the pituitary, pineal, thymus, thyroid, adrenal glands, and pancreas. In addition, men produce hormones in their testes and women produce them in their ovaries.

Hormones are powerful. It takes only a tiny amount to cause big changes in cells or even your whole body. That is why too much or too little of a certain hormone can be serious.
